Happy Halloween: Our Family Costume Reveal!

October 31, 2016

Happy Halloween!! The time has finally come to reveal our 2016 family costume, as promised!  I’m so excited to finally share it with you guys! It’s…..BACK TO THE FUTURE!

Marty McFly, Doc Brown, Lorraine and the DeLorean made the rounds at a few Halloween parties this weekend and it was a huge hit! While we didn’t win the costume contest for a 3rd year running (I think we were robbed, but that’s okay), people stopped us over and over to say how much they LOVED our costume.

We decided months ago that we’d do Back to the Future as our costume, so when we found a free hot pink Barbie Mustang Power Wheels at a yard sale this summer, we snatched it up. It was perfect to transform into a DeLorean time machine.

DIY DeLorean Time Machine

Here’s a brief tutorial to show you how we transformed a Barbie car into the DeLorean for our Back to the Future family costume. It was actually much easier than we originally anticipated and only took a few evenings to complete.

The hot pink Barbie Mustang, before we started:

delorean-diy-beforeFirst we primed the whole car (well, everything that you’d be able to see. We didn’t bother painting underneath.) Then we painted it gray.

diy-delorean-primer We made the exhaust system out of cardboard and paint, then spray painted them black. After it was completely dry, we cut out notches and attached them to the back spoiler.

Then we added some finishing touches like the DMC logo, the time machine clock, the flux capacitor, license plate, etc.

Don’t forget Marty’s skateboard or Doc Brown’s dog, Einstein!
